Just got the Midland MXT275 and the highly illegal (for GMRS) Baofeng UV-5R portable ham radio. Don't know yet if I'm going to follow through with getting the ham license.

The MXT275 is a solid unit! "Highly Illegal" isn't really accurate. It's illegal to sell open with those bands in use, not to use. That's the major disconnect. As long as you use radios at the proper output and with the proper call sign and follow the rules, you are not in violation of anything since... you're not selling anything.

Same goes for the ham radios IMHO. I tell people to buy the FT3D or FTM300 or FTM400XDR from Yaesu then get the MARS mod from Ham Radio Outlet or Gigaparts so literally you get a GMRS/FRS/Marine?Ham/Aviation radio in one unit. The laws pertaining to your comment are for selling radios, not using radios. I firmly believe that radio lobbyists designed the FCC laws to sell more radios, it's not about usage, lost most things, it's about the money. I'm sorry to rant on ya, like you, I didn't know the difference until Alex Aponte informed me.

Again, as long as you follow what the rules are for each type of frequency, you won't have any problem. Now, the cheap china crap radios DO produce way more spur emissions and that is where you can get in trouble, doesn't matter what bands you're transmitting on. I suggest getting rid of that UV-5R and switching to a Yaesu FT-70DR with MARS mod (or do the mod yourself).

The Midland is a clean radio, not as good as the Yaesu, but it'll be awesome for what you're doing. Thanks for sending in the call sign, I'll assign the badge now.

Yeah, I was being a bit tongue in cheek with that comment. I got it out of curiosity because it was so cheap. Seems like it would be perfect for the trail where if it got wrecked or lost, it wouldn't matter too much. You just go buy another one!
