While there are the cheap $30 ham radios, to get into our digital network repeaters when out on the trail, we can recommend the FT-70D made by Yaesu. At under $200, this radio is a budget-friendly handheld packed with features. While I suggest moving up to the FT-2DR or FT-3DR, if you're not ready to spend over $200, this is still a great option and even if you upgrade later, this can be a solid backup radio that can access most of the features we use on the trails.

    A better antenna - Diamond (Original) RH77CA https://amzn.to/3bvPysR
A great base mount antenna - https://amzn.to/3ctE6iB now, this isn't for trail use but it'll likely double your range when you're at your campsite.

You can toss an aftermarket antenna on your rig and literally only need this one radio for trail spotting or in the rig, etc. Plug it into your car charger and never have to use the battery. Also a major win for being dustproof.
