APRSDroid - This component bridges Backcountry Navigator Pro to the FTM-400XDR so we can see each other on our tablets or phones in real-time without the need for a cell signal. Now, that APRS Droid app says you'll need a passcode. Don't wait for one from APRSDroid, it'll never come. I used The site https://apps.magicbug.co.uk/passcode/, tossed in my callsign and a second later I had the code that worked.

To bridge the cable included with the FTM400, I bought a USB-C to USB 3.0 Adapter and then plugged it into my middle of the line Galaxy Tab A and a Shockproof Rugged Case. One of the best parts about BackCountry Navigator Pro is the fact that it allows you to store maps and data on the SD card, unlike many of the apps on the market today. So, to download every part of Wisconsin you may want to pair this with the SanDisk 400GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter. Over the last 6 months, I've downloaded a LOT of maps and I've only managed to fill the memory card about 40% full.

To mount the tablet to the Vector Offroad rail mount JLE-Dock I used the Industrial Metal Drill Base Tablet Mount which you can find on their site in a number of configurations (made in Chicago). Instead of drilling into anything (all these things put ZERO holes in your rig) I used a Ram Mount RAM-B-101U-C 1-Inch Diameter Ball Mount with Long Double Socket Arm which is a little long, but you can get shorter ones.

Over the past year, this setup has worked very well on the trails. Many have seen this hold up to crazy vibration and crawling. It's far easier to see the trails and tours on the bigger screen and make recording tracks way WAY easier.

Together, these items work to show me where to go and where others are in the APRS network.

The downside to this setup... the cable/ham radio won't charge the tablet. I'm going to try a Dual USB C Audio and Charger Adapter and see if that would work.

I confirmed this setup works! Now to sell that $50 cable that isn't needed.

Well if you want me to keep my APRS on or want to go our testing it on the trails or something sometime, let me know. I'd like to test off-grid more but don't' have anyone to test things with usually.

I think a test day would be a great idea. I am going to put it back in the jeep this weekend....getting ready for the off road carpet nationals in St. Cloud next week and like the communications while driving.
