I was just trying to take into consideration what John was saying. Regardless of vehicle, two main factors are total clearance and total length of whatever vehicle. Could it be measured that simply? It may be a moot point... I mean... If we're already using the signs via the leveling system, do we even need more than that? Just trying to keep it as simple as possible.

Tire size would be easy for crawling trails yes, it would also make it easy for the law to enforce. I'm perplexed with adding a vehicle to the signs as then you'll have 5+ signs needed. Doing this wrong would add millions in sign costs per state so trying to come up with a very universal sign system then then you can just use a sign for RL4WD and 4X4 if anything is allowed (that's more stage 2). Tire size wouldn't work for other vehicles like ATVs and UTVs and the vast majority of what we'll see will be shared one way trail I'd think.. or crawling waypoints off logging and forest roads to start. That's why I was leaning towards underbody clearance height and just overall width as those principals are more universal over anything else. I'll start a signing page where we can pick up where this leaves off.

The article has been updated to shift focus from the vehicle to more on the trail type and level. This should keep things simple.
