    SWOT Kettles Run May 2020

A few of us are going to run a portion of the Southern Wisconsin Overlanding Tour (SWOT) this Saturday. It’s mainly Gravel roads and scenic paved roads in the Kettle Moraine area but does include some things near the lakeshore as well. Some of these roads on the tour we haven’t driven yet, so it’s part adventure as well.

All Road Legal 4X4’s are welcome. If you have a crawler rig set up for more trail, this event isn’t going to be for that kinda rig. Be sure your rig is roadworthy for this one.

Must have vehicle insurance and valid registration. This is checked at sign in.

Please have a free or premium membership profile on https://rl4wd.com/member/join/online if you are an adult and coming on the ride. This helps us build our membership base and it’s very helpful when requesting land and trail access. Premium members get a shirt, membership badge, and more! It’s how we fund this whole shebang, and our trail work so please join! If you need to find your membership number, go to your profile, and look at the URL. There is a 3 digit number in there, that’s your membership number. Our goal is to try and reach 1000 members this Spring! https://rl4wd.com/event/all/304-2020drive

We’ll start at Firemans Park in Mayville and head east from there. 9:30am is when we want you there to sign in. We’ll chat for a few minutes and then head on our way. I’ll try and print out a paper map along with QR codes to the listings in the directory we’d like you to review. Please post that these trails are mainly flat and boring. It’s ok to rate them low or no stars. That’s what we use to show tourism and such that we want to see better trails! We need that data!

I’ll also try and have the GPS files on here before the ride or I’ll email them to the account on your profile.

    Rules -

COVID stuff - If you’re sick stay home. We don’t require masks or gloves. Social distance as you feel fit to do so, but we do not shun physical contact if you want to shake someone’s hand. We’re a riding family here and won’t tell you how to live your life.

    Gear -

Bring your radio. Ham is best, CB or GMRS work too. You can get a ham radio before you’re licensed https://amzn.to/36xkRmi that base model you can get at the Ham Radio Outlet in Milwaukee and it’ll do digital and group monitor stuff. We need to communicate with everyone in the group so if you don’t have a HAM, CB, or GMRS, don’t come to this ride.

Fire extinguisher is needed. First aid kit is highly recommended. Bring bug juice and sunscreen. The ticks are bad this year, treat your clothing with https://amzn.to/2XE22db Permethrin which you can also pick up from Walmart etc.

Recovery Strap - Something like this https://amzn.to/2XxJcnX just don’t get a strap with hooks on it. Best to get a kit - https://amzn.to/3emL7Cv so everything is covered.

Now, this event is more road than trail, but who knows what we’ll find. Have tow points and bring trash bags. We may pick up some trash if we see it on the trail.

If you have a crazy loud exhaust, don’t come on this ride. Some of these dirt roads are near homes and as such, we practice Team Stealth https://rl4wd.com/stealth to keep the trails we have from being shut down.

Always wait for the rig behind you. Sometimes in large convoys, we get split up when going through cities. Don’t panic, just wait for the person behind you and at turns so no one gets left behind.

Let the group know when you’re splitting off. You can come and go as you please, but let the group know you’re leaving so we don’t turn back around and waste time trying to find you.

9:30 we’ll meet at Firemans Park in Mayville and work our way east and north. There’s a bit of chit chat at first there and sign in. If you miss us, look for KD9NOB on aprs.fi as I’ll have my HAM APRS on and you’ll be able to see me in real-time if you want to try and join us that way. We've never met at this park before so if it's packed plan B will be the Horicon Marsh parking lot.

Any questions, please post them in this event. Thanks - Ryan Harden
